Attitudes to Energy Efficiency in Australia 2008

This brief assesses Australian consumers' attitudes and behaviours to energy efficiency and other environment-related activities, and summarises the development of the smart meter roll out in Australia, which is expected to help drive further energy efficient behaviours.

Scope

-Survey of 1,000 Australian households conducted in May 2008 regarding attitudes and behaviour to energy efficiency and priorities for the next year

-Breakdown of responses by state, age group, spend and household size

Highlights

Overall, 81% of Australians reporting cutting down on energy consumption in the month prior to the survey and 69% said they had actively looked to reduce their energy bills in the past 12 months

Some 71% of customers interviewed who had a time of use tariff linked to a smart meter reported a significant or partial reduction in energy costs since moving onto the tariff

Reducing energy use in the home was classified as a high priority for 62% of households, behind recycling (71%) and ahead of purchasing new energy efficient appliances (45%)

Reasons to Purchase

-Identify differences between consumers in different states, age groups and household size bands

-Track the progress of smart metering roll outs in Australia and uptake of time of use tariffs
